What is going on in our playground

"Play is serious business. It is how our children learn almost everything they need in life."
Maggie Dent

The focus of our new strategic plan is Growing Together with Connection and Joy. This theme is so appropriate in our modern world and engaging in the outdoors is crucial to our wellbeing. Each day we want our students to love coming to school and the playground is an important space for learning. We view break times as crucial in our students’ development. Through play, our young people can discover their own interests, abilities and limitations; they imagine, investigate and explore. They develop memory skills, build vocabulary, learn new mathematical concepts and scientific knowledge and learn how to get on with adults and other children.

Our students are really enjoying their new playground areas.

Junior School Playground

Each morning our Year 1 and 2 students are engaged with various activities to start their day.

We are loving the new mud kitchen, a hive of activity at break times with cooking, rock grinding and playing. The children are also loving the slack lines which are so good at helping them develop their core body strength.

Many thanks to our parents and community members for donating toys and activities for our children to engage in this space each day.

The Memorial Garden

Our school has a significant Defence population, from our families and staff, and this area is a reminder of their dedicated service in our community.

The new seating has arrived and it is great to see our parents and Senior School students enjoying each other’s company in the Memorial Garden area. When a place is inviting to sit, we are more likely to spend time there, talking, making connections with others and developing friendships. Already the plants and trees have started to grow and the garden is settling in to the landscape.

Our New Sports Court

It is so satisfying to watch our students really owning their new space, playing Basketball and Netball in formal and informal games. They have really taken it as their court and are looking after it well.

David Unaipon Culinary Garden

The David Unaipon Culinary Garden is another new space of learning, reflection and cultural experience and a small part of the College's commitment to our Reconciliation Action Plan.

It is fitting that this garden sits between our Science and TAS blocks. This garden has been developed and promoted by people across the College and planted and looked after by our Indigenous students. We are really looking forward to eating the produce.

Sensory Garden

Students have a special place in the Junior School where they are able to engage their five senses. In our planter boxes we have things like Lemon Balm, Lambs Ears, “Cousin It” plants, scented Geraniums and herbs. Every day there is change, some new growth, new buds and leaves, new insects. It is a place for our young people to touch and feel the plants and find enjoyment.

It is not unusual for Senior School students to bring cuttings of intricate geometrically shaped plants to place in the garden. We are currently looking for wind chimes to hang in the central tree. Any donations from our community are appreciated and we welcome our parents into this space to help it grow.
