Strengthening Literacy 

Inspiring joy in learning and laying the groundwork for our students to become lifelong learners is at the centre of what we do at Nowra Anglican College. One of the key focus areas of our strategic plan is to build powerful learners through the pursuit of innovation and excellence, with a particular focus on strengthening our literacy programs. In Junior School, this is evident in the evidence based practices that are being embedded within our teaching programs.

Literacy learning is not limited to the walls of a classroom. We are encouraging our students to recognise the many opportunities for literacy learning that extend beyond the classroom, including at home. Strong partnerships between home and school are vitally important to a child’s education and we want to invite you to be a part of this exciting journey! Many parents are incredibly keen to help their children develop essential literacy skills, but are not sure how best to do that. Our dedicated staff are eager to share with you what we are learning from research about best-practice - equipping you to support your child in their learning and ensuring we are unified in our efforts towards successful literacy growth for every student.

A love of literacy and learning begins at home and so we encourage you to establish some fun reading routines as a family. Whether it’s snuggling together for a bedtime story, or listening to an audiobook as a family on your next holiday, these simple acts of enjoying reading together can significantly boost vocabulary, comprehension, and creativity. Don’t wait until the kids are in bed to read a book. When children see you engrossed in a good book or jotting down ideas, they're more likely to follow suit, developing a strong foundation for their own literacy journey. reinforces the value of literacy and further enriches your child's learning experience.

Throughout a child's literacy journey there will be many chances to celebrate and acknowledge improvement. From mastering new words to conquering chapter books, from writing their name to creating compelling texts… success is made up of small, incremental steps forward. We want to acknowledge and celebrate each step, boosting confidence and encouraging our children to understand that effort and practice lead to progress.
