A group of talented Japanese students from Nowra Anglican College recently enjoyed an unforgettable day of language and cultural immersion at the Tanken Centre at Kirrawee High School.

The experience provided students with the opportunity to develop their Japanese listening and speaking skills through a wide range of interactive activities. Throughout the day, students participated in Japanese quiz shows, language games and team challenges, working alongside students from another school in mixed teams. The friendly competition created a fun and supportive environment where students were encouraged to communicate confidently in Japanese while making new connections.

Experiences such as these demonstrate the many benefits of learning a second language. Beyond developing communication skills, language learning strengthens memory, problem-solving and critical thinking, while increasing cognitive flexibility as students learn to think in new ways and from different cultural perspectives. Immersion experiences like the Tanken Centre bring classroom learning to life, building students' confidence to use Japanese authentically in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Students also enjoyed a delicious Japanese morning tea and lunch, adding another authentic cultural dimension to the experience.

The day was expertly facilitated by the outstanding Tanken Centre staff, whose enthusiasm and energy made every activity engaging and enjoyable.

Representing Nowra Anglican College were Zoe Brown, Ella Cassisi and Harrison Wenban (Year 12), and Charlie Morris, Carys Rowan and Gabriel Harbaugh (Year 10).

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the exceptional standard of Japanese demonstrated by our students. Harrison Wenban's Japanese fluency particularly impressed both the facilitators and students from the other school, while the overall ability and confidence of the Nowra Anglican College students drew enthusiastic praise throughout the day.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to strengthen their language skills, deepen their appreciation of Japanese culture, and experience the joy of communicating in another language. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented the College.
