Technology and Applied Studies (TAS) subjects offer students the opportunity to learn differently, by combining academic knowledge with creativity, problem-solving and practical application. For students selecting their HSC subjects, practical courses can be an incredibly valuable part of their pattern of study.

Subjects such as Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, Food Technology, Visual Arts and VET courses allow students to develop ideas, design solutions, manage projects and produce high-quality practical work while building the skills required for further study, training and employment.

Importantly, TAS courses can also make a valuable contribution to a student’s ATAR and overall HSC pattern of study. Many TAS subjects are Board Developed Courses that are eligible to contribute towards an ATAR, giving students the opportunity to combine academic achievement with practical, creative and project-based learning. For students who enjoy designing, creating and applying their knowledge, TAS courses can provide an excellent balance alongside more traditionally academic subjects and allow students to build a strong HSC program that reflects their individual strengths and interests.

These subjects are not simply about “making things”. Students research, analyse, experiment, evaluate and solve authentic problems. They learn to manage long-term projects, respond to challenges, refine ideas and turn concepts into tangible outcomes.

Through this process, students are encouraged to consider the impact of their decisions and recognise their responsibility to care for others and the world around them.

At Nowra Anglican College we are grounded in a Christian worldview, these courses provide opportunities for students to practise wise stewardship of God’s creation, using their creativity, knowledge and practical skills with purpose, compassion and integrity to develop solutions that can positively contribute to their communities and the future.

For many students, the opportunity to balance classroom learning and examinations with hands-on, project-based learning provides another way to demonstrate their capabilities and achieve success. Technology and Applied Studies subjects develop creativity, independence, resilience and practical capability, these skills extend well beyond the HSC and into university, apprenticeships, further training and the workplace.

There is more than one way to achieve a strong HSC and ATAR. Choosing subjects that match a student’s strengths, interests and learning style matters and for many students, practical learning is where they thrive.
